Wine growing is a new venture for Mrs Elizabeth Scott within her family-run arable farm at Skellow, just north of Doncaster. The first vines were planted in 2005 in the limestone soils at Summerhouse Farm on a one-hectare parcel of land selected for its gently sloping southerly aspect. The vines have flourished and yielded well and the first tastings are very promising.
Most English wine, including Summerhouse, is produced from hybrid vines quite simply because hybrids thrive in our climate.
Rondo
Rondo is a dark-skinned hybrid grape created from Zarya Severa and Laurent. Rondo produces a ruby-red wine of very good colour with overtones of classic red varieties, like a cross between Tempranillo and Syrah.
