Our whisky of the moment is Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky -10 Year Old - £26.83
For nearly a century the Yamazaki distillery has been dedicated to the pursuit of crafting a world-class whisky that is uniquely Japanese. The still green valley that this distillery calls home is blessed with the perfect balance of pristine water and humidity. Here they have been creating innovations in single malt whisky production that incorporate an art of whisky-making passed down through the ages. This never-ending journey that winds tradition with innovation in pursuit of the finest Japanese whisky has led to the creation of a world-class whisky known simply as Yamazaki.
In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory and “father of Japanese whisky,” built Japan’s first whisky distillery in the vale of Yamazaki. Back then whisky was unfamiliar to most people in Japan except for a wealthy few who could afford the privilege of enjoying expensive imported products. Working against all odds the distillery employees devoted every moment to improving the quality of Yamazaki single malt whisky. Before long the Yamazaki distillery was successfully producing a number of high quality blended whiskies along with Yamazaki single malt whisky, one of the finest single malts in the world. It stands as a shrine among Japanese whisky distilleries, a place that embodies the soul of Japanese whisky itself.
The Yamazaki distillery lies just southwest of Kyoto, nestled deep within the heart of Mt. Tennozan. Among all the sites selected as possible distillery locations, this was the one Shinjiro Torii had his heart set on. The mist-shrouded Yamazaki region provides the distillery with a beautiful backdrop painted with a palette of seasonal colours and an abundance of crystal clear water. It is all of these attributes combined that makes Yamazaki the ideal spot for making whisky.
