Founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum, it is located near the river Findhorn by the local town of Forres. Having been opened for a very short time it closed only to reopen in 1907 as the Forres Distillery. In 1919 the Forres distillery became Benromach and through a troubled life, all was thought to be lost when it finally closed in1983. However, it was sold to Gordon & MacPhail in 1998 where production is now around 200,000 litres of single malt whisky per year. Benromach means "Shaggy Mountain!" and contributes to Glen Calder, Avonside, Spey Cast & the Antiquary blended whiskies.
