The Inverleven Distillery was founded in 1938 by Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd. It was a small malt distillery which was built within the huge Dumbarton grain distillery complex and was the production base for Ballantine's blended whisky. Inverleven was mothballed in 1991 and Dumbarton was closed in 2002. As Inverleven was to be demolished in 2003, the boys at Bruichladdich found out and decided to stage a rescue of all the plant equipment. Bruichladdich are now seeking permission to rebuild on the old Lochindaal distillery footprint in Port Charlotte and put the Inverleven equipment to good use once more. In the future, it will be interesting to compare the original Inverleven single malt whisky with the new spirit produced at Port Charlotte on Isla.
